Ogre, you know, a super charming spot in Latvia, offers, arguably, much more than you might expect at first glance, so it’s almost like a launchpad for exploring some truly awesome nearby attractions, too it’s almost a hub for some cool spots you might not have thought about. Basically, we are talking hidden castles, seriously lovely nature trails, and quirky little towns just begging to be explored, too it’s almost as though they are just waiting for you! If you’re basing yourself in Ogre and looking for adventure, arguably these day trips could add some real spice to your Latvian holiday, so too it’s almost worth doing some planning. 1. Sigulda: The Switzerland of Vidzeme

Sigulda, now there’s a name that sounds straight out of a fairy tale, doesn’t it? Anyway, it’s very known as the “Switzerland of Vidzeme,” because of its gorgeous landscapes and crazy adventurous activities. The drive from Ogre is easy, really, so it’s just around an hour and that drive alone is worth doing for the views! Get yourself ready for rolling hills, literally picturesque forests, and a proper deep river valley that looks beautiful from all the high spots. Is that incredible or what!

Turaida Castle: A Step Back in Time

No trip to Sigulda is complete without getting to see Turaida Castle. Anyway it is something! The castle very goes way, way back to the 13th century. So too it’s almost ancient, it’s perched way up on a hill and looks very cool in real life. You can have fun very exploring the tower for some breathtaking views, more or less get happily lost amongst the grounds. There’s, arguably, also a museum that shows you some really cool historical tidbits; honestly, you could easily spend a good chunk of the day wandering the area.

If you are, arguably, a bit of a thrill-seeker, well Sigulda might be the place for you. Basically, they have got a proper bobsleigh track there, which is actually used for training by serious, pro athletes. Anyway you don’t have to be a pro! Obviously they have got different ride options, so you can try out different experiences depending on how daring you’re very feeling. Alternatively there’s the Gauja Tarzan park for a bit of a climb around in the trees – that can be a bit of a work-out but with gorgeous scenery. It may be perfect for people that like a rush. If you would rather like to get your heart rate up while enjoying your day out, Sigulda just might work!

2. Cēsis: Medieval Charm and Brewery Fun

Cēsis, a properly historical town that’s totally drenched in medieval charm. It’s more or less around a 1.5-hour drive from Ogre, a fairly pretty ride up through some more of the country. Basically, Cēsis offers that combination of historical exploring alongside some really cool local experiences, that is, the local breweries!

The main draw in Cēsis might be the Medieval Castle. So it is the big one. The castle very goes way back to the Livonian Order times, if you have heard of them. This castle basically tells a pretty intriguing story about Latvia’s history. So you’ll be able to properly climb around its walls, so see old rooms, more or less explore some spooky dungeons! They really make you feel like you are actually there and give some nice atmosphere! In the summertime, basically, they do events with people in full medieval outfits that can be something fun to watch and photograph!

After a morning of stomping about a castle, what else can you do? Arguably you might like a taste of some locally crafted beer! And if that’s you then Cēsis has just the ticket. Honestly, Valmiermuiža Brewery is one of the most well-respected breweries in Latvia. You could pop along, potentially find out how they do it and sample some of their range – but remember to please drink responsibly, as always, because it’s all very well seeing beautiful places like Cēsis and having an exciting vacation but its always useful to make sure that you keep yourself protected and be conscious that even abroad laws might still apply. 3. Līgatne: Secret Bunkers and Nature Trails

Līgatne, more or less a spot for history nerds! Arguably it has got this mix of soviet history and awesome outdoorsy stuff to enjoy. The drive isn’t too bad from Ogre, really only around an hour. You know, you have to start with the really bizarre place!

Basically this bunker, sometimes people say, “the Līgatne Bunker,” was supposedly constructed to house the political and party elite if Latvia ever got attacked, you see. It’s obviously built way underground, literally offering a real, real, eerily, vivid look into the past and really paints that past. Tours generally, apparently, take you through the different sections and kind of explain what everything was used for! It can be interesting.

Once you’ve had your dose of bunkers, the Līgatne Nature Trails arguably could give you a really pleasant contrast. Anyway this park, obviously is super massive and has animals, like bears and lynx and stuff, very living in big enclosures to simulate where they come from in real life. You’re, arguably, able to just stroll at your speed, enjoying just having some quiet time while keeping a little beady eye on the animals and getting fresh air. Obviously this should all mean there’s, arguably, something that everyone likes. Great if some family members are history geeks and other family members like some fresh air!

4. Jaunpils Castle: A Taste of Old Courland

Jaunpils Castle, just a small venture out into the Old Courland. Anyway the drive is a tiny bit further, literally about two hours from Ogre. If that makes any difference to your day trip decision making! You know, a pretty nicely renovated little medieval spot where they’ve done their absolute best to keep its past vibe going on!

So anyway, once you rock up there you’re going to have a spot of old-fashionedness about it – really, literally rooms styled as they maybe were back in medieval days. If that appeals to you. Maybe for all your old fashioned-y dreams coming true or a family trip with kids wanting to “experience the days of knights!” They are all, arguably, able to wear something themed and do different experiences; it might make it a much cooler experience all round. You know what to do. Give them a visit.

Basically the vibe continues to a selection of nice treats on offer! I can only speak for myself here of course. What about nice drinks from that region plus lovely homemade bits? It’s almost, genuinely the great way to taste and experience Latvia.

5. Ķemeri National Park: Bogs, Forests, and Sulfur Springs

Okay, let’s have some outdoor exploration in Ķemeri National Park. Obviously that’s much more the greeny bit in Latvia and honestly the springs, so all very different!

There are some lovely boardwalks; that makes life literally super easy. So easy to just roam! It very gets you good views, right smack over the tops of swamps, ponds etc. I mean they, literally look super magical especially around sunrise, potentially something to bear in mind when starting your very trip!

Then some people could get pretty thrilled about what they say are these medicinal muds on offer; it does seem to have been a tradition for centuries in Latvia. If it tickles your thrill spot, there is supposedly nice bathing in there, or even getting to see a weird sulphur spring bubbling its stinkier sulphury spring bubbles. Always good and worthwhile to make some nice memorable memories.
