Krakow’s Can’t-Miss Eats & Drinks: A Local’s Guide
Planning a trip to Krakow? You’re probably wondering where to find the best eats and drinks this fantastic city is providing, right? I get it! Figuring out where to begin with so many choices can be just a little tricky, is that fair? As someone who has spent quite a bit of time exploring Krakow’s dining scene, I can tell you first-hand that there are real hidden gems to discover. This list is designed to guide you to some standout spots, making your gastronomic trip to Krakow definitely worthwhile. Prepare to find some traditional flavors and really exciting modern twists. Let’s get started!
1. Zapiekanki at Plac Nowy: A Krakow Street Food Staple
If you’re exploring Kazimierz, the Old Jewish Quarter, a must-try is certainly the Zapiekanka at Plac Nowy. What is it, though? Imagine a toasted, open-faced baguette topped with cheese, mushrooms, and your choice of toppings. I remember my first time trying one; the smell alone pulled me right in. The mix of the crispy bread with the melty cheese and earthy mushrooms creates, too it’s almost, a fantastic quick bite. You’ll see many different stands, yet they’re generally consistent in quality. It’s Krakow street food done really right.
2. Pierogi at Pierogarnia Krakowiacy: Classic Comfort
For a taste of Poland, well, you’ve simply got to try Pierogi, is that fair? Pierogarnia Krakowiacy is one of those spots I visit every time I’m in Krakow because their Pierogi are simply amazing. These aren’t just any dumplings; they’re crafted with recipes handed down across the ages. From the savory classics filled with potato and cheese (“Ruskie”) to sweet versions packed with fruit, there’s something for all people, isn’t there? That they’re handmade makes all of them so very special.
3. Obwarzanek Krakowski: Krakow’s Iconic Pretzel
Walk around Krakow just for a while, and you’re certain to come across Obwarzanek Krakowski. These pretzel-like breads are sold from small blue carts scattered across town, and they make, arguably, the bite that embodies Krakow. They are boiled and then baked, that gives them, kind of, a nice, chewy interior with a crunchy exterior. Sprinkled with poppy seeds, sesame seeds, or salt, this classic treat makes, in my view, a great on-the-go snack as you see Krakow.
4. Polish Soup at U Babci Maliny: A Hearty Tradition
To truly experience Poland’s food culture, having some Polish soup is something you simply must do! U Babci Maliny has almost become my go-to place for really comforting, well-prepared soup. The restaurant has, actually, a cozy atmosphere that certainly adds to the overall homey feel of the dish. Attempt Żurek (sour rye soup) for something traditionally Polish – a dish that has an unmistakable flavor which might just surprise you with how enjoyable it happens to be! Other outstanding dishes on their menu are simply well worth exploring.
5. Craft Beer at Omerta Pub: A Local Favorite
After a day spent looking into Krakow, you can just unwind with a local craft beer, right? Omerta Pub gives you just that! Featuring several Polish craft beers, this pub allows people sample local flavors. They have pretty interesting brews too, so, too it’s almost, always something on tap to fascinate the beer fan. I enjoy Omerta because the place can offer just a relaxed atmosphere – which really is excellent for chatting with friends after sightseeing for long periods. Check out this local gem as it represents some of Krakow’s flourishing craft beer movement.
