Top Cruz Bay Outdoor Activities: Your St. John Adventure
So, you’re headed to Cruz Bay, St. John? Well congratulations, because you’re in for a treat. Really, it’s like stepping into a postcard, where the water is the color of gemstones and the sun just seems to sparkle a bit brighter. When I first visited, it was almost dreamlike, honestly. Beyond just lounging, though, Cruz Bay offers, that is, a bunch of outdoor experiences you probably don’t even know about. Let’s take a gander.
Snorkeling at Honeymoon Beach
Okay, so, if someone says “Honeymoon Beach,” too, it paints a picture of total paradise, does’nt it? Turns out, it lives up to the hype. Just a quick hop from Cruz Bay – there’s a trail or a convenient taxi – and, really, you’re there. I recall the first time I went, thinking, “This is where I should have spent my actual honeymoon!” (Sorry, honey!). The water’s really calm, actually clear as can be, and the sea life is rather gorgeous. Very colorful fish, too it’s almost like they posed for photos, casually swimming by, showing off, really. Don’t have gear? No worries; rental spots are available, pretty easy to come by actually. The current is usually pretty gentle here, making this a great place for snorkeling newbies, very chill vibes overall. Just remember to bring reef-safe sunscreen – we gotta protect these pretty underwater critters.
Hiking the Lind Point Trail
Fancy a little walk that ends with, really, breathtaking views? The Lind Point Trail starts very near the heart of Cruz Bay. It’s that convenient. So it goes straight up to, that is, the overlook at Peace Hill. The trail’s not really too strenuous, very do-able, more or less; but bring decent shoes because some spots can be a little tricky. It’s mostly shaded, actually a plus if you’re hitting the trail during midday. I suggest bringing your camera, or, actually, maybe just your phone – you’ll definitely want to capture the sweeping views of Hawksnest Bay. Early mornings on this trail, as a matter of fact, are the best, with less people and cooler temperatures. Keep an eye out for birds, too, very, very chatty fellas.
Exploring Trunk Bay
So, Trunk Bay often pops up as one of the world’s best beaches – very impressive honor, in other words. And that reputation is totally justified. I mean, is that white sand almost glowing, like a beacon calling you? Plus, very crystal-clear water, arguably some of the best snorkeling you’ll find. There’s even an underwater snorkeling trail. I thought it was rather adorable. You can actually follow signs on the seabed identifying the different species of coral and fish, so you can see what your dealing with. That Bay does get quite crowded, though, just a little heads-up. Go early or later in the day to kind of avoid the rush. And remember that there is a small fee to enter, more or less, since it’s a National Park Site.
Kayaking in the Mangrove Lagoon
For a change of pace, well, a trip into the Mangrove Lagoon is a must. Actually this really is a different viewpoint. You can rent kayaks from, that is, various spots in Cruz Bay and head out for a paddle. That lagoon is kind of peaceful and you may find, it can be really beautiful. Really it’s brimming with wildlife, everything from juvenile fish to birds, yet, so very majestic, that are hunting for lunch. Gliding along the calm water, too it’s almost therapeutic. Several tour operators lead guided kayak tours, or, maybe you can explore on your own if you feel like being brave. Either way, very don’t forget the sunscreen. The sun reflecting off the water can be deceptively powerful.
Relaxing at Cruz Bay Beach
Very occasionally overlooked because it’s right in town, but Cruz Bay Beach is actually really handy and it’s just really great, right on the edge of the ferry dock. Too it’s almost perfect for an easy-access sunbathing or a swim after your arrival. Yeah, that area is not really the most secluded place you could possibly find. Is that proximity to town really useful, or very easily accessed, though? Plus, I always love people watching, and the constant ebb and flow of activity gives it that authentic town pulse. Several bars and restaurants are just a quick stroll away, that means easy access to cold drinks and quick bites. Try out the beachside vendors too, that you’ll see from time to time, as they frequently have something unique on offer.
