Kendal Day Trips: Top 5 Must-See Spots

Kendal landscape

So, you know, Kendal’s a terrific jumping-off point, right? It’s almost perfectly positioned to let you discover some totally amazing places in the Lake District and beyond. We have curated what are, very much, our five favorite spots, that happen to make brilliant day trips from Kendal. Pack a bag, then maybe jump in your car or onto public transport, and then get ready for an adventure.

1. Windermere: Lakeside Charm and Adventure

Windermere Lake

First on our rundown is Windermere, just a little skip and a jump from Kendal! This area is probably the biggest lake in England, a place so full of ways to amuse you. You can like, take a scenic boat trip, allowing the gently lapping waters lull you as you pass grand mansions and small hidden isles. The area nearby brims, seemingly, with spots to grab a tasty bite to eat, very cute boutiques and paths for walking that give seriously great outlooks.

For a dash of something a little more upbeat, so too head on over to the World of Beatrix Potter. This location allows younger people – and those only young at heart! – to step into the universe of Peter Rabbit and friends, you know. It’s really a lovely area, and also a wonderful treat if the weather seems like it might misbehave a bit!

2. Ambleside: A Blend of History and Scenery

Ambleside Town

Ambleside, like another lovely town just north of Windermere, combines historic charm, or perhaps historical pleasantness, with a whole load of outdoor fun. Waterhead is definitely a place you will want to amble down to. It gives access to cruises all around Lake Windermere, allowing terrific snapshot moments. You might want to discover the little shops that spill across the town; maybe hunt down something quirky, something cute. After that, why not grab lunch in one of the many pubs, you know; places positively glowing with local character? You will find many things you may want to do!

That said, for the ramblers or enthusiastic hikers, there’s a bit of a walk you might fancy! Wansfell Pike soars very nearly 500 metres and looks over the township! You are rewarded, in a way, with panoramas stretching right across the valley.

3. Grasmere: Wordsworth’s Village

Grasmere Village

Just a little bit further into the Lake District awaits Grasmere. This place used to be the home of William Wordsworth, I suppose you could say Lakeland Poet Royalty. You know, if they had it! You can visit Dove Cottage. You might like to amble all around the Wordsworth Museum, really absorbing a bit about the guy’s story and like, also, his musings. In time maybe you can grab yourself a bit of Grasmere Gingerbread; that almost tastes as legendary as the writer himself, I suppose. Do explore the area, then perhaps allow yourself a moment sitting at the banks looking at Grasmere Lake – giving pause to let a sense of calm wash right over you.

That aside, this community oozes Lakeland magnetism, and provides many photo-opportunities for, I dunno, your Insta or something.

4. Cartmel: Gastronomic Delights and Priory Charm

Cartmel Village

A touch away from the well-trodden path so you might, then there’s Cartmel! This area sits a short drive down south of Kendal. Now, you may love yourself some good foods right? That seems to be this village’s speciality. That place is also recognised for its Sticky Toffee Pudding, too. Very good. It really reels people from all directions – apparently people go potty for it! Anyway, that spot is nearly so divine; perhaps swing by the Cartmel Priory – you might find some calmness and heritage all mixed as one. With its historic gateways and quiet courtyards the general vibe is great. Maybe potter around some of its cute store fronts.

And too, whether you’re quite into the sport or not, Cartmel Racecourse happens to host races over the summertime that bring with it festival sensations all wrapped as a day out.

5. Sizergh Castle: A Step Back in Time

Sizergh Castle

Now almost literally just a hop away from Kendal exists Sizergh Castle – which may be, in effect, a mansion! You might enjoy roaming around the gorgeous landscapes? In a similar fashion, also wander the stately building by itself – managed because of the National Trust. Perhaps just amble down some charming areas. It kind of feels like you’re stepping a foot in the olden days – that location tells stories that span almost many generations! What is too it’s positioned amid landscapes filled with birdsong. If all that isn’t the tonic from a buzzing city, then what exactly is?! You can perhaps find little picnic benches, giving space to consume that home-brought chow while taking the sights fully. This spot oozes interest.

On another point, also search for the wild animal spot; then there is a playground for kiddies making this, possibly, a wonderful family adventure.
