These are my thoughts about some great road trips in this beautiful country.

1. The Viking Route: Roskilde to Aarhus

Okay, picture this: you kick things off in Roskilde, maybe best famous for its rocking music festival, and yet so steeped in Viking history. Roskilde Cathedral is seriously unmissable, it holds the tombs of Danish monarchs. Really fascinating stuff! Next, point your car in the Aarhus direction, probably Denmark’s second city, it’s brimming with cool spots.

The drive takes you straight through some incredibly gorgeous countryside. That’s actually farmland for days, with that picture perfect glimpses of the sea kind of popping up here and there. Stop at a few of those ancient Viking sites that dot this route; there are like ancient burial grounds, rune stones – the works! Aarhus itself? It’s simply hip, cool, with ARoS art museum that features that stunning rainbow panorama on the roof. Plus, Den Gamle By – Old Town – almost literally transports you back in time. Definitely take your time with that one!

2. Funen Fairy Tale: Exploring the Island

Known to most as ‘the Garden of Denmark,’ Funen is truly gorgeous and almost totally begs for a driving adventure. Your trip seriously begins in Odense, the birth location of Hans Christian Andersen. Definitely spend a chunk of time here visiting his childhood location and checking out the museum.

The island is simply dotted with castles, manor houses and charming little villages. Egeskov Castle is really like something straight out of a fairy tale – and that’s actually complete with a moat! For some serious coastline scenery, head up to Kerteminde, a really relaxed fishing village kind of feeling. Funen’s smaller roads really let you wander past apple orchards and that classic thatched-roof houses – real ‘Danish hygge’ stuff.

3. West Coast Wonders: From Ribe to Skagen

Okay, strap yourselves in for some bracing coastal air! Your journey will begin in Ribe, perhaps Denmark’s oldest town, with that fascinating Viking history still really apparent. Take your time walking those ancient streets and check out the Ribe Cathedral, which gives that view. Then, simply point your wheels north towards Skagen, all while hugging that rugged West Coast.

This part of Denmark actually provides wide open landscapes, dramatic dunes, and, so, very expansive beaches. That would be perfect for stopping and breathing deep! Esbjerg has “Man Meets the Sea,” it’s a monumental sculpture overlooking the water. It’s definitely cool photo opportunity. Continue, so, up north, the landscape gets more raw and that wild. Skagen’s charm is undeniable, famous for its light that truly attracts artists for centuries. Check out Grenen, which is where two seas meet – the Skagerrak and the Kattegat – seriously, that’s an actual experience.

4. South Zealand and Møn: Cliffs and Castles

If you’re up for some natural beauty and some pretty stunning cliffs, South Zealand and the Isle of Møn are for you. First stop, South Zealand. That provides a mixture of verdant countryside and coastal scenery. The real gem? Møns Klint, these stark white chalk cliffs drop straight into the Baltic Sea, they’re awe-inspiring!

There’s fantastic hiking trails, and so even fossil hunting at the base. Then, you know, drive along Møn’s scenic roads, and so you pass through quaint villages and by farmlands. Liselund Park, so, that’s a romantic landscape garden really close to the cliffs and offers these nice spots for peaceful reflection.

Also worth a visit? Vallø Castle down on South Zealand, it presents like this grand old building in that landscape. And, yes, that truly lets you soak in Danish history and get those postcard-perfect shots.

5. Lolland-Falster: The Southern Islands

This trip to Lolland-Falster delivers the more relaxed, laid-back vibe. This region, which is so often overlooked, truly gives a slice of rural Denmark with a blend of beaches, forests, and those peaceful country lanes. Begin in Nakskov, Lolland’s largest city, before simply meandering along that coastline.

One highlight, so, might be a visit to Lalandia, this resort having a gigantic waterpark (that the kids would go mad for). You will locate gorgeous sandy beaches along Falster’s east coast; it’s an awesome location for swimming and just breathing in that sea air. The medieval center at Nykøbing Falster, along with that charming atmosphere, truly asks for you to stroll around and grab some eats.
