Hilo, found on the Big Island’s east side, is, more or less, this town that has such a distinct feel, kind of different from, you know, the resort areas. It is actually this place that’s full of such great spots that the locals like, really. What makes it even better is that those of us visiting get a shot at eating authentic Hawaiian food and drinks, as a matter of fact. Seriously, the food scene there is really something to check out, and you should get something from each of the cultures that help give Hawaii its charm. So you get real culture in the food.
1. Pineapples Restaurant: Where Local Meets Upscale
Pineapples Island Fresh Cuisine is a spot that is, like, so popular with visitors but keeps to that real local food charm. You’ll find it by the bay on Hilo’s famous Restaurant Row, at the Hilo Naniloa Hotel, very. That location’s the reason you’ll enjoy really nice views along with dishes that are all island flavors and ingredients, obviously. They do great food pairings that show the chef’s creative streak; I mean the Chef getting inspiration from right here in Hilo is quite awesome, I will add. Seriously, give the guava ribs and the fresh catch of the day a go; really you will have a great time, and it gets better. These ribs, very, I mean, they’re glazed really nicely with fresh guava, really and I think its what really shows local style but in a pretty classy kind of dish. Basically, the sweetness in that glaze is very nicely balanced with what that meat offers and its, obviously something worth that mention right? You know, I had the plate with a side of purple sweet potatoes, so good too, its almost as though its very worth a try!
2. Ken’s House of Pancakes: A Hilo Breakfast Staple
Ken’s House of Pancakes is, maybe, like the top of what the locals would love about the place, you know? Very seriously, you can find them, actually right on Kilauea Avenue; the place does, in short, food that tastes like a trip back in time. So this place does great food all through the day, like from very early in the morning right until, pretty late, really but most importantly they put a little local twist in it that reminds you that this place does local dining just right. Try the macadamia nut pancakes or go ahead and enjoy the Sumo platter; very, it will fill you up. If I remember right, people come back regularly because Ken’s is almost one of those places in town that are so good people visit to feel home!

Imagine fluffy pancakes with toasted macadamia nuts. I mean that pretty nut brings that unique Hawaiian twist into breakfast, actually? More or less what makes these pancakes pretty memorable is, I feel like, just that amount of the flavor in the nut.
3. Two Ladies Kitchen: Mochi That Melts in Your Mouth
You can find this famous confectionery place, really, down on Manono Street, that. Apparently it’s one of those shops the locals absolutely rave about and those people that happen to love little sweet snacks too, I hear? Two Ladies Kitchen has, of course, built a nice name that shows how much care is being put in mochi that they’ve made fresh over many years. The shop’s really not large and also, it isn’t really showy; more or less all you see here’s those yummy little desserts you can order one by one, clearly. That strawberry mochi, that has fresh strawberries inside a pillow that’s made of mochi, just try it. Seriously try this local bakery, very special and a very rare treat and one not to miss at all!

Think about fresh strawberries sitting nice in a tender wrapping of mochi. The taste of what that mochi does against strawberry taste and is more or less what keeps everybody who’s tasted it getting back.
4. Hilo Farmers Market: A Taste of Local Produce
The Hilo Farmers Market, usually, it happens Wednesdays and Saturdays on Mamo Street, right in Hilo Downtown. As a matter of fact, with about over two hundred sellers it’s a space to go have those local foods that the Big Island farmers love to share, you know? Of course you’re able to grab all kinds of local Hawaiian stuff; yet that experience is the great part really. What I am saying is get a freshly-made fruit smoothie, I would argue sample that lilikoi butter, then grab, for instance, maybe a little lunch plate, and as a matter of fact it can all become such a happy experience, right? 5. Big Island Candies: Sweet Treats Made in Hilo
Big Island Candies on East Kawili Street, is just the most great spot to see exactly how chocolate and shortbread goodness is made. Actually this factory has got clear big windows so, literally those visiting actually get to view candies, shortbread being made and prepared which can really offer one of those “one-of-a-kind” kinds experiences. Of course all those chocolate dipped shortbreads that the company is basically famous for is really great however, to be honest what could, pretty much seal all of that would seem to be macadamia nut toffees and all things of this nature that the business prepares at the site. Now what that site gets right to those interested is so great but it does have what that Big Island and particularly, literally the town Hilo wants those to enjoy and also get such of.
