Kralendijk Foodie Top 5: Eats & Drinks You Can’t Miss

So, you’re heading to Kralendijk, Bonaire, and pretty soon you’ll want to discover the awesome food scene, alright? I mean, that’s the plan, right? It’s like, you’ve got that laid-back Caribbean vibe mixed with some seriously tasty eats. When you’re exploring, you will notice there’s plenty of great places for dinner and drinks; you might see restaurants offering both traditional food or food with more creative twist and cocktails that mix local and international tastes. No matter what sounds yummy for you, this place can deliver; but it can feel overwhelming, as the restaurant options are so plentiful. I’ve put together a list to help make deciding where to go that bit easier.

1. Kite City: Casual Beach Eats

Kite City Bonaire

If you happen to be after a seriously chill vibe combined with some great grub, Kite City’s almost always where it’s at. Picture this: you’re basically right on the beach, or pretty close, the breeze is just right, the sky is blue; Kite City provides relaxed seating, or space to take your dinner onto the sand, very close to you enjoying the water, sun or kitesurfing. This popular food truck provides just enough shade with it’s canopies. Of course, a favorite with locals and tourists, they’re known to whip up tasty lunch items. I found my food was not heavy, greasy nor expensive either.

Anyway, let’s just say you want the freshest catch and some yummy sides. They’re kinda famous for their lionfish ceviche – seriously, you must give it a try; that is if you enjoy seafood, which most people do while at the sea. It’s, like, not only good for your taste buds but it’s also good for the environment as eating the Lionfish controls their invasive presence on Bonaire’s reef, a good option if you’re environmentally mindful; alright. A tasty ecological service!

2. Mezze: Mediterranean Flavors with a Bonaire Twist

So, picture something a bit different for the Caribbean, a bit more exotic, you know? Yet, you’ve still got those beautiful island influences. That would basically be Mezze. They’re doing things with their food in a super creative manner, combining fresh flavors from the Med with Bonaire’s local food choices. If you’re really eager to taste food with many complex notes, this is very likely your restaurant, okay?

And, okay, the setting… oh my days. Just to get to this fantastic building at Kaya Grandi 68A, your anticipation for your visit might build with every meter you are getting closer. So, basically, Mezze has the appearance of a cozy sanctuary, rather like stepping into some trendy restaurant in Europe. Actually, dining here, enjoying dishes like grilled octopus with paprika, and perhaps you’re just chilling out there in their funky, comfy seating? So, your mood can transition to “super relaxed and happy”; to be sure. By the way, did you make a reservation for dinner? Okay, get on it!

3. Rum Runners: Waterfront Dining with a View

Rum Runners Restaurant Bonaire

Now, for an experience that is equal parts stunning views and tasty eats, it’s almost always Rum Runners. This place kinda hugs the waterfront; very nice, if you appreciate eating almost right on top of the sea. From almost any spot on the restaurant deck, your dinner is going to come with a show – clear water, fish jumping around, sun, sky beautiful view is everything for Rum Runners Restaurant.

I suppose the big question on everyone’s minds is “Is the food any good?”. They’ve got a wide range, just slightly inclined towards tasty American options. Basically you want some pizza, ribs or burgers with a cold drink. In any event, people love it; as well as all being at fair prices.

4. Gio’s Gelateria: Sweet Treats Done Right

Gio's Gelateria Bonaire

Let’s get to something a little bit sweet! It might be kinda weird suggesting somewhere for sweets amongst actual, you know, food restaurants… that is unless it is the bomb; almost definitely something you will never forget, Gio’s Gelateria almost certainly earns a spot on this list. What I like is that their sweet deserts seem a bit healthier; certainly a lighter experience than some of the alternatives, that’s for sure!

If you’re strolling along Kaya Grandi, like just after you’ve feasted; basically I’m suggesting an “after dinner gelato”… So, you spot that iconic spot? Well you will be super tempted to enter and it just might become a highlight of your trip, if you’re looking for an excuse to taste so much creamy rich, yet light goodness in the tropical heat. Their flavors? Everything from that super reliable chocolate to fun things that’ll surprise your senses. What? Why not. When? Now.

5. The Brewery: Bonaire’s First Microbrewery

The Brewery Bonaire

Okay, you want somewhere to chill? Where you can perhaps take the family. Or maybe get slightly tipsy and try some dancing. This place has everything – or as close to as you could hope! And for an interesting piece of history; actually this is Bonaire’s initial microbrewery – serving up some very creative, craft beers and some super-original cocktails too, should you not have the stomach for beers. Their motto and name reflect this island’s history as part of Holland with a local Bonarian take.

It’s almost like they are committed to quality beer, providing food for families or parties too. If you feel yourself getting too hungry or light headed (or want that lining for your tum tum), no problems because food choices are plentiful; burgers, skewers, seafoods… Basically whatever your current mood is!
