Melbourne Day Trips: Top 5 Adventures & Getaways
Okay, so you are visiting Melbourne, or maybe you just live here, and very, very need to shake things up? A day away could be just what you need! This list has five pretty wonderful options that offer just a little something for almost anyone – whether you fancy sipping wine, gawking at coastlines, hanging with cute penguins, or escaping into charming towns. I am going to highlight five spots perfect for that short getaway.
1. Yarra Valley: Wine, Food, and Scenery
Basically, a trip to the Yarra Valley is usually about wine, but you, like your friend, can easily spend a day enjoying beautiful landscapes and incredible edibles too. Drive through rolling hills, then take in the vineyards and, if you have any extra time, then treat yourself to a cellar door tasting. Several places offer food, so maybe check out wineries like Domaine Chandon or Yering Station. Or maybe just look for cheese and chocolate places if wine is not something you enjoy!
Now, so a hot air balloon trip over the valley could even make this day out incredibly memorable. It’s a bit of an early start, I guess, yet watching the sunrise from way above is a magical thing to do, at the end of the day.
2. Mornington Peninsula: Beaches and Bathing Boxes
You know, the Mornington Peninsula just feels a little world away and also a little resort-y – with sandy beaches, great views, and even better places for a great lunch. Visit those iconic bathing boxes, and then hike the trails at Point Nepean. As a matter of fact, the Peninsula Hot Springs can make your vacation that little more calm if it all becomes a little exhausting. Relax into naturally heated pools and spa experiences – or that kind of stuff.
I mean, as an alternative, just make it all about those cute seaside towns along the coast and possibly treat yourself to some fresh seafood! Like your friend, make that vacation day unique!
3. Great Ocean Road: A Coastal Classic
Seriously, even a portion of the Great Ocean Road just makes for an astounding day. Begin earlier to fit in things along the drive: the views at Bells Beach are something you probably wouldn’t want to miss! Next, stop to stare at Split Point Lighthouse at Aireys Inlet, then take that walk through the rainforest that exists over at Maits Rest. Lastly, gawk in awe at the Twelve Apostles. That’s just a lot! In some respects, this drive can get really jam-packed if it’s something you would love, or that sort of thing!
4. Macedon Ranges: Nature and History
Frankly, the Macedon Ranges just provides this beautiful combination between peaceful nature spots, historical sights, and really fascinating towns. So maybe climb up to the top of Mount Macedon. This area is really rich with botanic gardens and scenic views. And, clearly, the village of Hanging Rock is really impressive, just by the way. Pretty good for something! Very, very old trees provide that sense that the woods are whispering all around you! Also consider some winery visits in the region – maybe that is something you should think about?!
5. Phillip Island: Penguins and Wildlife
Of course, a very good time on Phillip Island tends to feature fluffy penguins. And seals. Every sunset brings penguins to parade over the beach, which is just so cute to see, even, right? A day out there does mean spending quite some time watching cute things! You could also check out the Koala Conservation Centre or, like your mate, might watch waves crashing against the Nobbies!
