Alicante, you know, it’s often viewed just as, you know, this sunny getaway spot. It’s mostly thought of with just beaches, of course, that lovely harbor. Still, for those of you who really are curious, and inclined to explore beyond the usual tourist spots, you soon discover there truly is this very amazing and rich cultural side to the city, too. First, is that if you actually want to, you know, begin any proper discovery of Alicante’s story, the Castillo de Santa Bárbara, almost looms in a really dominating manner over everything else, that’s what really gives you your jumping off point, nearly. Way, way back, thinking back to the Middle Ages, this very enormous fortress, so, saw action through several clashes, and it’s had plenty of changes made to it by each new crowd taking over, see. Alright, if, instead, something modern is on your mind, the MACA is a good place to go. That place lives right in Alicante’s oldest structure, what they once called La Asegurada. Also, I want to point out that this little combo of very modern art, set right within what feels to be one very age-old building, you see, does set this museum apart, truly. Right in the building itself, that alone merits looking around; it creates an interesting space, honestly. What stands out big here, certainly, would be the really big Eusebio Sempere group, it really gives you so much to ponder.
Then you get a handful more art from really important people from way back from the 20th century, very famed ones like, oh, you know, Picasso, Miró, Dalí – basically, that is a really impressive roster, virtually. Take the second to just roam each room at your own pace. Then let it dawn just how any art can push what you previously thought about life, what you thought about anything, apparently. And entrance costs you nothing!
Las Cigarreras Cultural Center
For those who might be into something a bit different, the Las Cigarreras Cultural Center has it, for sure. Originally a former tobacco factory, so this space got converted into something completely new as the cultural center the locals currently visit. Those big spaces there now, as I understand it, host just all type of events and displays – from presentations by local sculptors and painters right up through band rehearsals by Alicante’s up and coming musicians! So there’s almost, like, there is always something new unfolding.
On select days there actually will be this fair presenting products coming right from Alicante itself, you know; a chance to grab some very interesting crafts right from this very area, possibly, or try wines right off local vineyards. You know, maybe talk right to these local artists; this space gets everyone mixed right into Alicante’s own talent in a pretty informal environment.
Gravina Museum of Fine Arts MUBAG
The Gravina Museum of Fine Arts MUBAG, too it’s located smack dab in a very old palace and gives a proper peek at artwork just coming from Alicante alone. Think of something crafted any time right between the 1500s onward through those first years of the 1900s, possibly finding painters from all across this local region, yet, it brings just a feel, actually, of how those creatives over previous centuries viewed themselves, right. Right near the sea, by all that is exciting in downtown, just a brief jaunt off the central area of Alicante.
