Erie, Pennsylvania, that’s almost right on the shores of Lake Erie, has a food and drink scene that’s really taken off these last few years. There is more to this place than just perch and walleye. It features a bunch of really awesome restaurants, cool bars, and unique spots that just might give you a reason to come and visit or explore a bit if you live nearby. So, if you are wondering where someone who lives here actually likes to go, here is my personal rundown of the top spots. This will help you eat and drink your way through what Erie has to offer. I’m trying to keep it real and give you choices that both tourists and us locals enjoy!
1. U Pick 6 Tap House: A Beer Lover’s Haven
If you like trying new beers, that place called U Pick 6 Tap House is practically heaven. You can think of it almost as a playground for people that like fancy beers. With locations on upper Peach Street and on State Street downtown, U Pick 6 has a ridiculously wide selection, constantly rotating. So, you have got new stuff to try every single time. What’s special is you actually have control over what and how much you want to sample, thanks to the self-serve tap system they’ve got set up. You get a card, swipe it at the tap, and only pay for the ounces you pour. I mean really who doesn’t enjoy doing things your own way, and the option to test a small amount? They aren’t just about beer though, very, very much not. They normally feature a food menu loaded with tasty snacks, which are great for sharing, and heartier options, which are perfect for lining your stomach while you explore their huge collection of drafts.
Why it’s awesome: Getting to try so many different beers in one place is really hard to beat, right? I mean, the atmosphere at U Pick 6 is almost just right. It is that cozy and upbeat feeling you get from a place filled with people that really, really enjoy trying something new, talking, and maybe arguing a little bit, too, about the best IPA.
My recommendation: Be adventurous and go for those odd brews you would not typically grab! Their rotating selection also features seasonal drinks that always give me a nice surprise.
2. Pineapple Eddie Southern Bistro: A Taste of the South in Erie
Do you need something savory with that distinctive Southern touch? Pineapple Eddie Southern Bistro is really where it is at. It’s more or less like stepping right into a Southern kitchen, where aromas of spices and home cooking smack you in the face the moment you get in. Think barbecue, shrimp and grits, and all those other classic Southern comfort foods you love. And they make all this stuff in house so it has an authentic homemade taste. Plus, comfort food goes beyond their main courses; expect a delightful selection of desserts to wrap up your tasty meal.
Why it’s awesome: What really gets me is the whole vibe and the kind folks that you always get there. You might not realize this but great food tastes even better when it’s dished out with a smile, so too you’ll appreciate how friendly they all are. You get to come out with this lovely sense of being really satisfied and super welcome at the same time.
My recommendation: Seriously, the Shrimp and Grits. They are basically amazing, and are probably the reason that a lot of folks keep coming back. The flavors, very, very good and the texture is basically dreamy. Now, I just made myself hungry!
3. Room 33: Erie’s Hidden Speakeasy
This little treasure of a place is nestled right beneath street level in the heart of downtown Erie, that place called Room 33, offers, like, a unique, speakeasy-style experience. In other words, its atmosphere is dimly lit, its furnishings are lavish, and its whole place seems geared to take one way, way back in time. With atmosphere just dripping with old-school class, they serve up, well, the best in handcrafted cocktails, fine wines, and a range of small plates perfect to pair with your drink. So it really isn’t your run-of-the-mill bar. The service really puts them above the rest. Expert mixologists that have mad skills will remember exactly what you like, so they customize something awesome just for you.
Why it’s awesome: Just because stepping into Room 33 makes you sense that, well, you have discovered someplace really special and almost secretive. Its all about the air of sophisticated fun that keeps you coming back and trying different things.
My recommendation: Let the bartenders do their magic for you. Tell them what kinda flavors you lean towards. Don’t be bashful because they will mix you a drink that is definitely more memorable than sticking with just a plain old gin and tonic.
4. Lake Erie Wine Country: Sip Your Way Through the Vineyards
Slightly east of Erie, you might notice Lake Erie Wine Country offering that chance for a great day out and about tasting wine in what looks and feels like rural America. Nestled beside the Lake Erie shoreline, its where this bunch of wineries lies, boasting real, real spectacular views, warm, inviting settings, and a bunch of, often award winning, wines to try. I want you to expect tours of the vineyards where they make the wine, tastings that are directed by super knowledgeable staff, so you get the low down and can enjoy your favorite drink to its potential. A very lot of these vineyards feature nice outdoor patios and they have events, like musical performances live so the day kinda makes itself when your at one.
Why it’s awesome: Well, the scenery! Seriously. I think it makes you feel like you got transported right out of your day to day and put into some tranquil oasis in nature where drinking wine feels completely appropriate any time.
My recommendation: Do plan ahead because you would be very remiss not to hit more than one winery on your tour! Also, give your tastebuds a fair sampling of whats on deck – from crisp whites to full flavored reds – as Lake Erie Wine Country features a wide enough mix, there is kinda bound to be some special wine in the group. Take time to unwind and enjoy the vineyards’ beauty.
