The Gold Coast isn’t just about shimmering beaches and awesome surf; no, it’s also very, very rapidly growing a fantastic art and culture scene that’s just waiting to be discovered. If you are like your average artsy tourist then get excited! Far from what some might have previously assumed, there actually are various cultural offerings to explore, with lots of little hidden gems dotted all over the place. So, if you find yourself drawn away from the sun and surf, or maybe even seeking a bit of a change of pace, then I want to tell you about my five favorite Gold Coast places to soak up some art and culture. You know, spots that feel kind of inspiring and provide something different, a lot like these great historical places nearby.

1. HOTA, Home of the Arts

HOTA Home of the Arts

HOTA, that is to say, Home of the Arts, is absolutely where I almost always begin; yeah, it’s sort of the Gold Coast’s cultural heartbeat! This lakeside hub seems to have really changed things, moving from a performing arts complex to, well, really like a true arts precinct. You see, HOTA isn’t just your run-of-the-mill gallery, too, it’s almost a whole experience, one where you find a mix of art, theater, film, and, oh, even outdoor concerts, all rolled into one really pretty package. One visit there always reminds me that I need to invest in stuff I genuinely enjoy a bit more. In short, you’ll find pretty fantastic family events held here.

Their gallery spaces display a wide range of art, anyway, starting from contemporary works by Australian artists and onto internationally recognized exhibitions, that are generally amazing. And if it turns out you are an early bird, and, I don’t know, are feeling particularly energized after some great beach yoga at dawn, I strongly suggest checking out what’s currently on show as the building is so stunning. It feels like walking into a very interesting world.

I also rather like HOTA’s outdoor stage and lawns; those spots make HOTA so perfect for a picnic followed by a show. You might be wondering where HOTA gets it’s name. Is that so obvious, so, too, maybe not, anyway you can find an extensive list of history facts on their homepage! Oh, and let me tell you, their café is the right spot for grabbing coffee or something delicious, actually making it super simple to spend pretty much a whole day taking it all in.

2. Currumbin Rock Pools

Currumbin Rock Pools

For a much less formal art experience, well, if you actually have a thing for combining nature and artistry, why not go to the Currumbin Rock Pools? Okay, okay, yeah, I know what you’re probably already thinking: “Rock Pools!?”, yeah, that is true, but trust me a little; more or less tucked away just a short drive inland, are a number of beautifully painted rocks, that are arguably, a fun expression of local creativity. The colors and designs bring a sense of joy to the surroundings. Also, I believe the rocks change fairly regularly as new artists add their touch, so too there’s always some completely different to view.

Actually, it’s great; the pools are family-friendly, so you actually can make a day of it, basically packing a picnic, spending some time swimming, or, maybe if you like your art, hunting for the prettiest painted rocks. The whole spot kind of represents community art and creativity, yeah, showing what could happen if you get everyone involved in contributing something to shared spaces. So I believe you will feel truly satisfied, after a long day of visiting famous parks like this.

3. Dust Temple

Dust Temple

If you’re into an atmosphere that is a bit…unconventional, then I think you need to make your way over to Dust Temple. Okay, so it’s actually quite different, blending the vibe of a workshop and also an art space. The venue usually houses a gallery, often has live music, plus has really amazing coffee – really bringing together the best of various worlds! Okay, and, it’s located in Currumbin Waters and seems like something of a hotspot for creative locals to hang out. So that being said, it could very well offer an awesome look into the local arts scene.

You might find exhibitions ranging pretty far and wide, varying greatly in their form from paintings and photography over to sculptures. So, too, they put on film screenings or music gigs. The idea, it seems, is to promote new or fresh, artistic experimentation, which is so why there always seems to be something new and really engaging to experience every single time. Seriously, I feel very spoiled every time, a bit like I feel when having access to useful information about the world through reading current breaking news!

4. Gold Coast City Gallery

Gold Coast City Gallery

You’re probably thinking right now something like: “Yeah, but surely there needs to be a proper art gallery?”, so well, okay, meet Gold Coast City Gallery. It’s conveniently located inside of HOTA, offering pretty great access to art from the Gold Coast region, too along with other parts of Australia. The gallery’s collection might be said to place its main emphasis really on the development and showcasing of Queensland art. Very regularly they will display traveling exhibitions too.

I suppose if I wanted to sound serious, which I very rarely ever do, then I’d also point out how much the gallery strives to provide access to art for absolutely everyone. The gallery holds programs or activities and events, many, sometimes specifically aimed at kids and schools; and the adult ones are quite neat as well! The rotating exhibitions definitely manage to keep the collection completely fresh and are seemingly making each visit interesting, much like those super informative reports about trading that you get when joining a group. So it feels rewarding as the visit is time well spent.

5. Bleach* Festival

Bleach* Festival

You might not realize that every August, the Gold Coast seems to get even more lively, as this spot hosts Bleach* Festival, and you’re quite correct if you hadn’t, it is not commonly well-known, yet! This festival is apparently more than your run-of-the-mill event; and rather is a real ten-day celebration. Okay, that celebration showcases Queensland arts, like, at their finest. Bleach* seems to bring together various artistic fields, ranging everywhere starting from live music over to theatre, plus visual arts or even film, all hosted against the Gold Coast’s breathtaking backdrop; I really find it an amazing mix.

Often times, that very festival pops up in places from Broadbeach or Burleigh Heads onto Coolangatta; it always brings the artistic spirit all around. Bleach* always puts local artists squarely into the spotlight, too and they kind of encourage creative experimentation through many mediums. So I think attending one, only once, gives you pretty close exposure to the Gold Coast art scene; much like reading my favorite art reviews does.
