This guide highlights five must-visit places where you can really dig into the authentic tastes of this charming Scottish island. Get ready for some seriously scrumptious experiences!
1. Digging Into Hebridean Fine Dining at Digby Chick
First off, there’s Digby Chick in Stornoway; it’s really a star in the Lewis dining scene, offering an eating experience that’s a bit special. What makes it so attractive is, well, that it gives you classic Hebridean ingredients that are presented with modern cooking styles local island flavors. It almost sounds kinda fancy, huh? Expect things like fresh seafood, locally farmed lamb, that you usually just can’t find anywhere else. Their menu kinda changes with the seasons, which tells you how fresh it actually is, as it only includes whatever looks top notch from island providers that day. It tends to be more than just a dinner; it’s more about what the island has to offer itself.
I went there last fall, and they had this black pudding dish that was quite unique that I wasn’t so sure about to begin with! It had scallops and apple chutney. A bit weird, I know. Turns out the combo was just unbelievably yummy. The sweetness and sharpness of apple really cut through the rich earthiness of the black pudding. And the scallops? Cooked almost to perfection. You need to order them in advance too that kinda says everything about why the black pudding combo was the star of the show!
2. Coffee and Culture Collide at The Islands’ Cafe
Another brilliant spot is The Islands’ Cafe, basically a chill little hideaway right there in Stornoway, ideal if you need some warmth and a break after sightseeing or after some gift searching! The big attraction? Their freshly baked scones that come directly from the ovens, particularly. Oh, but wait until they offer clotted cream and lovely local jam on top of them! Oh and don’t leave without a pot of their special blend that feels so comforting as it warms from the inside. Very calming actually after walking on the coastal breeze that can so often blow on that North Western tip coastal breeze! I almost couldn’t find a seat the last time I popped in, with people meeting for gossip, couples canoodling with each other! Just bliss.
What really gave me those cozy feelings when I popped there recently were the bookshelves all along one side. So, people were just sitting there looking at things while drinking and munching that are about island life. Looking at things from fishing to local myths. Honestly, the scones will blow your mind, but stick around; it’s really the vibe of the place that will take a hold of your soul. That alone will stay with you for much longer! If you’re wandering down there at lunchtime I did notice quite the queue forming at 1PM one Monday so perhaps plan around that.
3. Traditional Tastes at The Butty Bus
Now, for those wanting a really tasty quick fix that’s like your classic roadside snack stop but then super boosted? Look no further than the amazing Butty Bus that’s been a constant right in the core of the island, Sgaire Bhuidhe! So, it’s basically really, really super local but, yeah, that’s what makes it so interesting. Their range extends right out, they basically do all sorts of sandwiches (butties), and rolls with lots of options; from breakfast ones packed high with sausage, right out to lunch options packed with home cooked meats and what appears to be endless options. They also throw in weekly deals that makes each and every trip kinda different classic butties.
I tried out the Black Pudding Butty on my trip to Lewis. It has a thick, sliced piece of grilled Stornoway black pudding that looks really really nice on an airy buttered roll. And the black pudding they use is supplied, too, from a proper local butcher that appears to have been going strong forever too; seriously, the quality sings with it. What the Butty Bus really serves is an interesting bite of genuine Lewis food with just really zero affectation at all, you can just feel it has poured some love into the process of feeding us lot.
4. Sampling Local Brews at the Isle of Lewis Brewery
If you kinda fancy washing down all that grub with some proper island booze then get yourself to the Isle of Lewis Brewery Isle of Lewis Brewery. This lot offer several beers reflecting all the character you might imagine from the area from which it is created, that being Lewis. So, each brew is crafted almost with as much personality as your best mate!
I was really lucky and bumped into a tour around a couple of years back now and it really seems to reflect its heritage into every bottle. My favorites are the “Hebridean Gold,” and the “Stornoway Pale.” “The Hebridean Gold” actually stands out; it tastes so crisp and a little sweet, just proper ideal after a walk around the windswept beaches and landscapes that that bit of coast gives out. “The Stornoway Pale,” really? it kinda has that kick that gives an extra edge that you won’t just forget.
5. Sweet Indulgences at Hamnah’s
So, lastly if you just have a thing for something delicious on your trip, particularly as your day goes on then, seriously, a trip to Hamnah’s is so, so ideal! That store? Well, I suppose it provides ice cream and all things like yummy candy. Now you know this place only cares to go after the best ice cream suppliers right around Scotland so the flavors they have change all the time – sometimes hourly, which I heard a local shop owner remark about while passing! Also, as Hamnah’s sits, quite literally smack bang right on the pier, you could basically easily go and explore some local harbor life and have a bite and enjoy local harbor life. One thing they told me was that they always had sugar-free choices so folks don’t feel as guilty buying! Bonus points for that!
One sunny evening on my visit this place gave me so many interesting feelings! Stornoway was sparkling! Sea shimmered as I walked along, what looked to be like the pier. Basically loads of little shops and cafes sitting there but still it almost had this rural thing going on. At Hamnah’s? I found what turned out to be perfect: a “tablet” ice cream (as in the creamy Scottish candy that literally melts in your mouth when made correct – which of course is done to expert level here). Basically just go on! It has a little sugar in there but I’ve hiked about eight miles of hills that afternoon… I think you and me deserve some sweet treats right?
